and music by Alexander Szinberger The short opera "Auschwitz 44 – A Tragic Scene",
by Israeli composer Alexander Szinberger, is a 10 minutes
piece, in which a horrific scene is depicted: in the Auschwitz
German death camp in 1944, a Jewish mother is forced by
a Nazi soldier to decide which one of her two daughters
will live and who will die. The composer, Professor Alexander
Szinberger, is himself a Holocaust survivor of the Auschwitz
death camp, who lives in Israel. Before World War II he
held a teaching position at the prestigious Academy of
Music in Cluj-Npoca, Romania. He received the Trevi Prize
in Rome in 1969. This opera is performed by the Romanian
National Opera. It has been performed on several occasions
in Israel as well, including at the Presidents residence
in Jerusalem on Holocaust Day of 1982.
